Traditionally, the pancakes used up some of the items given up for Lent such as eggs, milk and butter. Then, when we’ve all gathered we move to... Temptation The reading is Matthew 4:1-11 – the temptation of Jesus, traditionally read the first Sunday of Lent in one of the synoptic versions. We’ll think about the things that tempt us away from following, and make a collage of pictures. People will be invited to think not just of pictures of actual things that tempt them (eg chocolate) but things that symbolise perhaps more serious temptations – power, greed, selfishness, laziness, etc. Magazines will be available, together with some computers linked to a printer. Then, we move to... Confession The reading is Nehemiah 1:5-7. We will be invited to confess our sins in silence, then write down that which we want to confess. That piece of paper will then be thrown into the fire and consumed. Then we move to... Absolution The reading is I John 1:5 – 2:2. The tradition on Ash Wednesday is for a cross of ashes to be put on the believer’s forehead to symbolise repentance and forgiveness through Jesus. So the words of absolution will be pronounced, and we will be invited, if we wish, to have the cross put on our foreheads. Then we move to.... Restoration The reading is John 15:11-17. We will gather as a community of forgiven people round the communion table where we will share communion together as a symbol of our restoration to the community of God. Blessing We are then sent out into the world to live the good news.....
